We have taken every precaution to ensure your comfort and safety. However, in the unlikely event of an emergency due to fire, it is best for everyone in the building to be familiar with basic life safety recommendations. Please take 5 minutes to read this.
In an emergency: call Reception (5000) and follow staff instructions.
Before You Unpack
- Count the number of doorways between your room and at least two emergency exits.
- Check their exact positions (do you turn any corners? left or right?).
- Locate the nearest fire alarm.
- Learn how to switch off your room A/C unit.
- Keep your key card with you (you may need to return in an emergency).
If You Cannot Go Downstairs
- Stay calm.
- Go up the stairs to the roof, holding the handrail as you walk.
- Leave the exit door to the roof open (this is the only door that should be left open in an emergency).
If You Smell Smoke While in Your Room
- Stay calm. Turn off the A/C.
- Feel the door with the back of your hand.
Prevention
If the Door is Hot — Stay in Your Room
- Call Reception (5000) and report your name, location, and the nature of the problem.
- Stuff wet towels and sheets around door seals and air vents.
- Use the waste basket to bail water from the tub if necessary.
- Remove drapes from the windows.
- If smoke enters, create a tent over your head with a wet blanket.
- Look out the window. If smoke is not rising from a lower floor, open the window slightly for fresh air.
- Do not break the window unless the room is smoke-filled and you cannot open it (you may need to close it again if smoke comes from outside).
- Hang a sheet out the window to indicate your presence. Do not lean or climb out.
If You Notice Fire or Smoke in Your Room
- Stay calm. Turn off the A/C.
- Leave the room immediately and take your key card with you.
- Do not stop to take any other possessions.
- Close the door behind you to inhibit the spread of fire.
- Activate the nearest fire alarm.
- Use the stairs and walk to the nearest emergency exit ( do not use the elevator ).
- Close the emergency door behind you to prevent the spread of fire into the stairwell.
If There is Smoke in the Corridor
- Stay calm and keep low to the ground.
- Crawl close to the walls.
- Count the doorways to the exit.
If Your Emergency Exit is Blocked
- Stay calm and try the second exit.
- If that exit is also blocked, return to your room (you should have your key) and follow the steps under “If the Door is Hot — Stay in Your Room”.
If the Door is Cool
- Leave your room with your key card; do not stop to take possessions.
- Close the door behind you to inhibit the spread of fire.
